From the supplier: A study on whether geographic expansion among franchisors is constrained by firm capabilities or environmental factors revealed that neither view absolutely applies. While results largely supported the hypothesis that geographic expansion hinges on environmental factors, it was also found that firm capabilities relative to size also affect the decision to expand. No relationship between geographic expansion efforts and a firm's age was found, however.
