The AAFD Welcomes Ross Almo as New Executive Director



The American Association of Franchisees & Dealers (AAFD), a non-profit trade association that represents the interests of franchisees and independent dealers, has announced that Ross Almo has joined its executive team as the company’s new Executive Director.

Almo will initially focus on supporting, managing and growing the AFFD’s network of franchise suppliers, and the AAFD’s member benefits program. Additionally, he will supervise and support the AAFD’s affiliated franchisee associations and expand the AAFD’s events and meetings agenda.


Almo brings extensive franchise industry experience to the AAFD, including over 20 years as an Econo Lodge franchise owner, 11 years as COO of the Econo Lodge Franchisee Association and nine years as COO of the Rodeway Inn Owners Association. During his tenure with the Econo Lodge Franchisee Association, Almo increased the association’s membership by 100%, coordinated over a dozen events a year and more than doubled the group’s revenue. Both positions gave Almo important insight into the challenges faced by franchisees and franchisors and allowed him to manage and resolve conflicts between the two interests.


“Ross Almo has been a long-time supporter of the AAFD. The depth and breadth of his experience as both a franchisee and a leader within the franchising industry makes him an incredible asset to our organization,” said Robert Purvin, founder and president of the AAFD.

The future of dry cleaning comes to OKC.

Wahoo’s Fish Taco Opens Restaurant in Woodland Hills, California



Celebrating 25 years of serving its signature fish taco, Wahoo’s Fish Taco (http://www.wahoos.com/), a community mainstay and worldwide pop culture phenomenon since 1988, announces the opening of its newest location in Woodland Hills, Calif. Located at 19960 Ventura Boulevard, the new restaurant offers all of Wahoo’s distinct signature flavors including charbroiled or spicy marinated fish, chicken, steak, and tofu fillings in a variety of items such as tacos, burritos, bowls, salads, and the original fish taco. This Southern California location is scheduled to open on Thursday, June 20.

Many aspiring entrepreneurs have identified restaurant ownership as a viable and exciting way to enter into the business market, but have not properly assesses what it takes to be a successful owner. The job description of a restaurant owner involves numerous duties, and it’s important to remember that ultimately, the owner is accountable for the success or failure of the business. Those who thrive as restaurant owners require a great deal of managerial and communication skill, analytical capability, self-confidence, dedication, and leadership qualities.  


Besides assuming ownership of the restaurant, you will also be tasked with the responsibilities of running and maintaining the business, and will often have to serve as the restaurant manager as well. Your actual job description will be dependent on which other workers are employed, as they will often be able to supervise various departments and take care of many logistical aspects, thus relieving some of the pressure on your shoulders.  


It is therefore crucial to hire people who are adept at caring for the daily functions of the business, including ordering, overseeing and tracking all of the food, equipment, supplies and other inventories that are required. This person will also need to take responsibility for hiring, training, scheduling, directing and dismissing employees, and maintaining the equipment, building, parking lot or any other property of the business.


However, the bottom line remains that as the owner, you are ultimately responsible for ensuring that the business runs efficiently and professionally on a daily basis, and of overseeing the finances, promotions and overall goals of the restaurant.  


Most often, the owner is the first person to arrive at the restaurant, and the last person to leave. They are also required to be present at peak period, including weekends and public holidays.


The environment of a restaurant can be tense and chaotic at times, and these situations should be handled in a rational and prudent manner. A restaurant owner is essentially the ‘face’ of the business, and must therefore always deal with customer complaints promptly and professionally.  


Once these all these factors have been taken in to account, then an individual can accurately asses whether they have what it takes to be a restaurant owner.
